If you're going then go

So, [livejournal.com profile] heyjudelove mentioned that I have a lot of icons of pretty people, but that she has no idea who any of them are, because she's not in bandom. I offered to make primers and such, because everyone should be in bandom, and she agreed that there's never enough pretty people or boylove in the world, so she would like primers. I then looked like this: \o/!

So, I'm starting off with Panic, because I'm still all giggly about them being adorable and faily through twitter. Someone said it doesn't matter what branch of bandom you start out in, you'll end up in Panic (and I can't for the life of me remember who or where I read it, but it's so true). I figured I'd start with them just to make it easy.

So not dial-up friendly. Lots and lots of images.

Let's start at the beginning, yeah?

This is Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith.
Photobucket

They met when Ryan was six, and Spencer was five. Ryan was hitting golf balls into his neighbors yard (proving that he was born an old man), and Spencer, because he is awesome, decided that him and Ryan were going to be BFFs. Which they are. They grew up together in Summerlin, Nevada, which is a suburb of Las Vegas (a rich suburb of Vegas. The houses are ridiculous there). When they were 12 and 13, they got a guitar (Ryan) and drums (Spencer) for Christmas, and started off playing Blink-182 covers, with their friends Brent Wilson and Trevor something-or-other (I can't find it, but there's a picture of Ryan and Trevor being less-than-straight in their school uniforms, and it makes me giggle). Their band was called Pet Salamander. Trevor left the band for whatever reason, and it gets renamed The Summer League. Brent, who went to a different school (Ryan went to Catholic school, just so you know, and he's said he's an atheist, so you can imagine how well he got along with his teachers), met a kid in his guitar class, named Brendon Urie. Brendon came over to audition (at Spencer's grandmother's house, which was where they practiced), and pulled out a Gollum impression. They let him in the band. A couple practices later, he was singing, and it was decided that he should be the lead singer, not Ryan, because Brendon is awesome. At some point after this, they rename the band Panic! At The Disco.

So, the band now looks basically like this:
Photobucket
(holy crap, you guys, they were so young!)
From left to right: Brent Wilson (bass), Brendon Urie (lead vocals/piano/guitar/any instrument you need cuz he's amazing like that), Spencer Smith (drums), Ryan Ross (guitar).

Photobucket
Yes, Ryan is groping Brendon. Get used to that.

Ryan contacts Pete Wentz through LJ (I probably should've started with Fall Out Boy, this part would make more sense, but whatever) who had recently started his own label, Decaydance, and sends him a link to their PureVolume sight so he can hear their demos. Pete tells Ryan he likes the music, asks if their lead singers hot (to which Ryan replies yes, because Ryan loves Brendon), and flies down to Vegas to hear them. For whatever reason, Brent and Spencer can't make it, so the audition is Ryan, Brendon, and a Casio keyboard with preprogrammed beats. Pete signs them. (Which has made people wonder what Ryan did for their contract, because the demos are kind of hilariously bad (I'll link to an upload of them at the end) and it doesn't sound like they had the best audition in the world, and Ryan was kind of a huge Fall Out Boy fanboy.)

Have some more pics from around this time:

Yes, that's Ryan, Brendon, and Spencer sleeping on a hide-a-bed (pullout sofa). There are other pictures from this night, and they never fail to make me go, OMG so freakin young!

(just to recap, since they all look horrible in the first picture: l to r is Spencer Smith, Ryan Ross, Brendon Urie, and Brent Wilson)

So, they drive out to Maryland and record their first album, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.

Recording Fever

Then they go out on tour with The Academy Is... and another band, I believe. At some point during the tour, MTV and radio stations begin playing Panic!'s first single, I Write Sins, Not Tragedies, and somehow, they start getting bigger than TAI. Naturally, things on the tour are tense, with the little baby band being more well known than the headliners. To add to this drama, Brent starts showing up late to soundchecks and generally avoiding the rest of the band. He skips a few soundchecks, then skips a show, and the rest of Panic! are naturally pissed off. Their friend Jon Walker, who is a tech for TAI, fills in for him. Panic! fire Brent, and hire Jon as their new bassist. In an interview somewhere, they were asked what the difference between Jon and Brent was, and Spencer replied, "Musical talent."

So, now Panic! looks like this:
Photobucket
left to right: Jon Walker (bass), Ryan Ross (guitar), Brendon Urie (vox, guitar, and piano), and Spencer Smith (drums).

Spencer's pink panties will never not be funny to me.

With the Lucent Dossier dancers, who came out on Panic's headlining tour Nothing Rhymes With Circus with them.

They go and play Reading and Leeds in 2006, and Brendon gets hit with a bottle and knocked out for a few seconds. Fandom has still not quite gotten over this.

A video of the bottling.

So, Panic! now have the awesome-ness that is Jon Walker with them, and they head out on tour to use it. I'm almost positive that they went out on different tours, but the main title that stand out is Nothing Rhymes With Circus because it is also known as The Gayest Show Ever.

Here's a little bit of what was going on then (mostly pics because I'm too lazy to track down decent vids):

So, they tour for roughly a year and a half straight, and, naturally, get way burnt out. At the end of 2006, they start working on a new album, and they decide to go up to a cabin in the mountains to work on it. Fandom has nicknamed this "The Porno Cabin". The boys are arguing a lot (because deciding to isolate yourselves in the middle of nowhere after spending roughly 18 months in a bus together is not exactly the smartest idea ever). Ryan wrote all the lyrics from Fever and was attempting to do the same on this album. From what we've heard, it was turning out to be a weird musical about wolves, I guess? They were forcing the music too much, and feeling the pressure to follow Fever with something amazing, and it just didn't work. So, they scrapped that album, left the cabin, and started over. (Or, they were having too much sex to get anything written in the cabin and had to leave if they ever wanted a second album. Your choice.)

They all relax a lot and end up working together to write the second album, Pretty. Odd. And they drop the exclamation point. They record most of it in a studio in the Palms casino in Vegas, and part of it in Abby Road studios in London. (I'm still not over this, because I love the Beatles so much. Abby. Road. Bitches.)

So, now they look like this:

They all look much happier now, which makes me happy too.

So, that's the band overview, but hey, as long as I'm doing this, I'm gonna do it right, so how about individual bios?

Ryan Ross

From his 21st birthday party, where his hotass ex-girlfriend jumped out of a cake and gave him a lapdance.

So, Ryan was born August 30th, 1986, which makes him 22. When he was 3, his mom left him and his dad. I don't believe he has much contact with her anymore, and he might have half brothers and/or sisters, and/or step brothers/sisters. His father was an alcoholic. It's kind of a given that Ryan didn't have the best home life. He spent a lot of time at Spencer's house when they were growing up, and then later a lot of time at Brendon's. He was given a full-ride scholarship to UNLV, and he attended for one semester before quitting to focus on the band. He wrote all the lyrics on Fever. "Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks" and "Camisado" were written about his dad, just to give you an idea of his home life. "Lying is the Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off" was written about an ex-girlfriend of his who cheated on him. His dad died in 2006 due to alcohol-related causes. He used to not drink because of that, but he does now.

When Ryan was in high school, he posted pictures of himself on his LJ and to communities like [livejournal.com profile] tightpants. Ryan was definitely a hot piece of jailbait, and, one can assume, Pete Wentz saw these pics before Panic was signed. Ryan's probably underage in these next pictures, so scroll if you're uncomfortable with that.

I would just like to say, Jesus, look at his hands!

Photobucket

Photobucket
That's his dog, Hobo.

So, his now ex-girlfriend is Keltie Colleen (who is a total hotass), and she posted a (now deleted) blog on her website when they broke up, saying that he had been cheating on her. This has kind of ruined Fever for me, because I can't listen to it without laughing. Oh bb!Ryan, your righteous indignation just isn't the same.

Brendon Urie
Photobucket
I love this pic, even though he looks so sad, and I just wanna hug him!

Brendon was born April 12th, 1987. (which makes me happy, because my birthday's April 12th too!) He's the youngest of 5 kids, and he grew up in a Mormon family. During the second half of his senior year in high school, he fought with his parents about what he was going to do with his life, and they kicked him out. He worked at a Smoothie Hut to pay for his crappy apartment and his part of the rent for the practice space. He almost quit Panic to become a hairdresser (you only think I'm kidding). Him and his family have now reconciled, although I would assume that they're still not entirely happy with some of his life choices (i.e. smoking pot, drinking, sleeping around, basically being a rockstar). He's kind of a tool, but he's a loveable tool, so it's all good.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Brendon is part muppet.

Photobucket
Also, he's a pretty, pretty princess. (And, I know I'm supposed to look at this picture and laugh and be like, Oh Brendon, you're such a dork! but instead I look at it and go, Brendon, please stop assaulting me with your hotness! Clearly, my brain is broken.)

Photobucket
This is him with Dirty. Dirty is Pete's bitch. I kind of love Dirty, and he might get his own section when I get to Fall Out Boy.

Spencer Smith
Photobucket
I kind of love Spencer unhealthy amounts.

Spencer was born September 2nd, 1987 (I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong.) He's kind of awesome. He has two younger twin sisters. He's the most serious one of the group, and the most likely to handle business stuff. It's kind of implied that he spent a lot of time taking care of Ryan when they were younger. He's the one who fired Brent, because Spencer is the one Panic calls on to get stuff done. He's kind of bitchy, but also a huge dork.

Photobucket

Photobucket
See? Bitchy.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Also? I kind of want to lick him. Because, hips.

Photobucket

Photobucket
bb!Spencer was the prettiest girl in all the land...

Photobucket
Prettiest smile in the land, at the very least.

Jon Walker
Photobucket
JWALK!

I, uh, have no idea when Jon was born. But I know that he's the oldest of the Panic boys! And that he's awesome, so really, I feel I have the basics covered. He's from Chicago. The general consensus of bandom is that Jon Walker is the most awesome person in the universe, and he is made up of puppies and kittens and rainbows, and if I should ever find out otherwise, I might kill myself, because I love Jon insane amounts. The first show he played with Panic, he had to fly out short notice, and he learned all the bass parts by listening to Fever on his iPod on the flight over. He pretty much lives in flip flops. The pair that he usually wears is apparently from high school. He's a photographer, and he takes pictures of himself with his adorable cats a lot.

Bonus! Zack Hall
(shut up, it's my primer and I can include who I want.)
Photobucket

Zack is Panic's bodyguard, and is basically awesome. Because, yeah, most of us seem normal, but there are definitely creepy fans out there, who don't appreciate the fourth wall and try to get the guys to read slash, or who want to kidnap the boys for real, or who give them pubic hair cookies (this may have actually happened, I've heard it referenced so many times in fic that I'm assuming it's true). He has a speech he gives before each meet and greet telling everyone, "Don't be creepy." Basically, I love Zack just as much as the boys, because he keeps them safe.

The Music

I have a lot of Panic music on my computer. I uploaded it all for you, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that you should buy the albums too, because they are awesome and deserve money. Especially if you're gonna be reading stories about them having sex with their bandmates.

A Fever You Can't Sweat Out

Pretty. Odd

A bunch of covers. So, because they were getting big and headlining even though they only had 13 songs, 2 of which were only instrumental, they started performing covers during live shows.

The PureVolume Demos

It's Almost Halloween mp3 It's ridiculous and adorable.

Shout cover I'm not sure why this isn't in the covers folder, but whatever.

I'm gonna do this the lazy way, and link you to full ship manifestos for each pairing.

Recs

Oh man, there is so much good fic out there. I'm gonna try not to overwhelm you.

given limits exist, Brendon/Ryan
Circus AU! Brendon and Ryan are tightrope walkers! It's kind of long, but so worth it.

Only Unto Him, Spencer/Brendon
As a Prince(ish person), Spencer was meant to be pure in every way. He didn't know what to expect from an arranged marriage — but certainly not Brendon's incessant grabby hands. Who did this bouncy, mysterious stranger think he was? AND ARE SEXY TIMEZ EVER GOING TO HAPPEN? [Hint: it is quite likely they are.]
Also pretty long, but awesome as well.

Counting Down The Days 'Til You're Walking Through My Door, Brendon/Ryan
Brendon had enough time to wonder, what kind of name is Ryan for a – before she looked up and, wow, totally not a girl after all.

Sweeter Than Candy, Better Than Cake, GSF
It's really no big deal that their male guitarist smells fruity and has unnecessarily glossy lips.

honeypunk, Ryan/Spencer/Katie Kay
Spencer never makes the mistake of thinking it is a love story, he doesn’t.
One of my favorites, ever. Even if you don't like het, you should read this, because there's nothing graphic and it's beautifully written.

A Different Kind Of Love Story, Zack/Katie Kay, implied Ryan/Brendon
He’s really a mellow guy, most of the time. There’s just something about the idea of these boys running amuck in the middle of a rodeo in Arkansas that makes him start to sweat.
Another one of my favorites. This is exactly how I picture tour for them. Perfect.

There's Only You In My Suitcase Heart, Brendon/Jon, Ryan/Spencer
AU where everyone's in a wedding band, there are wedding band-offs, nobody's life is a sequel to Boyz N The Hood, and Brendon's so hopelessly in love with Jon.

The Present and the Distance, Brendon/Ryan, Spencer/Jon, eventual GSF
There are 17,508 islands in Indonesia, about 6,000 of which are inhabited. On August 31, 2008, returning from an Australian tour in the middle of the year's most violent storm to date, a plane carrying Panic at the Disco loses power, veers off course, and crashes into one of the remaining 11,508 islands. This is their story.
I think pretty much everyone in bandom has read this story, and for a good reason. It's absolutely amazing. But long. 19 chapters, plus an epilogue. Worth it though.

Crush (With Eyeliner), GSF
Yeah, honestly, Jon Walker totally is that kind of guy. He just doesn't know it yet.

Manifesto, implied GSF
It's never a good idea to believe everything you read on the internet.

Okay, I'm stopping myself there, because otherwise I'm gonna rec all kinds of stuff.

So, I think that should pretty much cover it, for Panic at the Disco.
